Greetings oceanography adventurers!
Next week’s field trip has finally been solidified (Saturday, Oct 18). We
have a very special treat this weekend. Our field trip will actually be taking
place on the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation’s oceanographic research
vessel, “La Mer”. While we will not actually be leaving the dock, we will
get a complete tour of the ship with a demonstration of all of the special
equipment used by the technical staff of the Bureau. We will also have a power
point presentation and show-and-tell from a senior biologist from the Los
Angeles County Sanitation Districts. Both agencies will describe their
different ocean monitoring programs and how their good work is helping to keep
the offshore waters healthy. Be prepared to take notes and ask lots of
questions.
The ship is docked in Marina Del Rey Harbor, which is 38 miles from Fullerton
College. Therefore, you will want to give yourselves plenty of time to get

We will meet at the Blue Lighthouse in Fisherman’s Village off of Fiji Road
at 9:00 am. There may not be much traffic on Saturday, BUT you will want to
give yourself MORE THAN an hour to get there, just to be safe. Don’t be late
– the ship is close to the blue lighthouse, but you can easily get lost if you
show up after the group has already boarded. AGAIN, DON’T BE LATE. To save
gas, you may also want to consider contacting your lab partners (or anyone else
in the class) to carpool. There is a small fee to park at Fisherman’s
Village, or you might consider parking for free in Lot 52, just north of
Fisherman’s Village (it’s about a 5 minute walk from Dock 52).
You will take your quiz and hand in your homework from last week at the start
of the field trip (e.g. shortly after 9:00 am).
