Course
Information for Students
Welcome to all current and prospective students!
If you aren’t afraid to work hard and truly learn, then you are in the right place. If there is anything that I can do to assist you, or if you have any questions, please feel free to email me at dclahane at fullcoll dot edu anytime.
First, I encourage all students at all levels of mathematics to consider taking Math 299 Independent Study with me. This course is a one-unit elective course in which students and I meet to think about interesting problems in pure and applied mathematics that are currently unsolved. The course can also be taken in order for students to pursue advanced mathematical topics that are typically not offered by community college mathematics departments. Current students are working on projects in probability/statistics, astronomical imaging, and a third student is working through a book that teaches students how to speak the language of advanced mathematics through proofs. Meeting times are flexible, and there are countless interesting problems to consider. Students with undergraduate research experience are in high demand, particularly at graduate schools, and have opportunities to present their findings at regional and national conferences. If you have mathematical topics that you would like to consider, or you would like me to suggest problems for you to consider, I strongly encourage you to contact me. I welcome all students, regardless of background and ability. Anyone can excel at mathematics if they patiently and diligently work at it. “There is risk, but there is also reward.” Send me an email if you are interested or have any questions.
