     A few words about myself...

As is the case with all people, my childhood experiences helped shape my life. Born in Germany, my father's military career took us to many parts of the world.  Fortunately, these experiences and the guidance of both my Native-American mother and my Scotch/Irish-American father taught me the importance of cultural diversity.  .This is  probably why human behavior and our social world always  fascinated me.

When I was a young girl, psychology always fascinated me.  Yet, it wasn't until high school that I became interested in pursuing this field as a career.  Like many of you may understand, my life circumstances stepped in the way and it was some time before I was able to pursue my college education.  Actually, it was the dark clouds from several family tragedies that reawakened my interest in psychology again.  Thankfully, I found the courage to turn this interest into an educational goal and slowly I completely changed my life.  Believe me, I have first-hand experience with the uphill struggles of earning degrees and I know what each of you sacrifice for your education.

What are my personal interests?

This may sound like a prepared speech, but I enjoy teaching psychology and interacting with students so much that I feel like I don't work at all.   Even when I'm not teaching, I spend a lot of time meeting with students, reading new research, exploring new methods of teaching, or something related to these areas..      drawing of the Mayflower

Family ancestry is another major interest and I have found genealogy rewarding in many respects.  I've enjoyed discovering family members and learning the historical and social contexts of my ancestors, especially John Howland and his wife Elizabeth Tilley, both Mayflower Pilgrims, and Mary Nolen Rail, a Choctaw Indian and remarkable storyteller.  Their lives were far from easy by any stretch of the imagination.  Yet, their accomplishments left footprints in this world that time cannot erase.

picture showing giraffe pictures One hobby I have is collecting giraffes.  Indeed, these are fascinating animals and I love their vibrant colors and the elegance of their unique tapestry.  My personal collection is a family of plush, carved, ceramic, and glass giraffes.   Yes, these giraffes are culturally diverse too.  Some traveled from hidden parts of Africa and enchanting cities of Europe, such as Pordenone and Rome in Italy, to join my collection.   When I work at home and grade your assignments, I have many big brown giraffe eyes watching me.  Besides giraffe eyes, a very independent cat sits on top of mypicture of patches the cat on a computer monitorcomputer monitor and, almost upside down, and watches me too. Why she likes to do this, I'll never know.

Like many of you, I thoroughly enjoy music, films, books, and art.  In music, I like most genres, but my all-time favorites are the Blues and Jazz, especially artists like Etta James, Irma Thomas, Muddy Waters, Luther Vandross, Phil Perry, Michael Buble, Warren Wiebe and Josh Groban.  Film?  Yes, I prefer comedy films.  Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein is one of my long-time favorites.  When it comes to authors, the powerful and inspirational words of Maya Angelou and Alice Walker are at the top of the list.  Artists?  It is hard to name just one, but one that is very special to me is the work of Van Gogh.  I find his art intriguing partly because it is a visual expression of his personal journey with a psychological disorder.

Last, but certainly most important, I always enjoy spending time with my family and friends.  When I spend time with my daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Rob, and my grandchildren, Cameron (14 years), Harrison (12 years) and Madeline (3 years), there is never a dull moment.  My grandsons are busy in Scouts, learning to play the guitar, and playing video games now.  Yes, I am truly proud of them.   Whether it is playing video or board games, sharing a film, or just talking, there is always excitement when our family is together.  My friends I'm sure are like yours - fun and exciting to be with!!  We are always doing something together and one never knows what that will be!! (smile)
