These are the student reponses
(verbatim) at the end of the course :
- What advice
do you have for anyone thinking about taking an Internet-based
course? What might you have done differently?
- Did you enjoy
the course? What made it particularly enjoyable or particularly
unenjoyable? Explain.
- How would you
rate the exams (much too challenging, fair and appropriate, too
easy)? How did you prepare for the exams? If you could do it
over, what method would have help you the most in preparing for
exams?
What advice
do you have for anyone thinking about taking an Internet-based
course? What might you have done differently?
- For anyone who is thinking about
taking an internet-based course, I would say go for it. I think
it is perfect for someone who has a busy work schedule, but I
think that if you already have a tough school schedule, than
you might not want to add on an internet course, because they
do take a lot of time. If I could have done anything differently
in this course, I wouldn't have procrastinated so much, even
though the course worked out for me.
- I have already encouraged numerous
people to take advantage of web based classes. I would not be
able to attend college without them. I had a hard time getting
started. Now that I know how the WebCT works, I think next semester
will be much easier.
- Read the book so that you actually
learn and have something to take with you after the class is
over.
- To make certain that you work
each day at least on his course. Do not try to say "Oh,
I'll do it on Saturday" and then find yourself behind. Work
hard and study the lectures, and the book
- STUDY HARDER!!!!!!
- Don't procrastinate, stay current
on assignments.
- Any student doing a online course
definitely has to be self-motivated. Also they have to be committed
to spending a great deal of time, as I think you have to study
harder. What would I have done differently? I would have listened
to this advice all summer instead of just the second half;)
- You have to be a self starter
and don't expect to be reminded about assignments that are due.
Just do them ASAP and turn them in so you don't forget.
- Don't get behind on your coursework!
- The combination of on-line and
Summer courses is very difficult! Do not underestimate the number
of hours per week that WILL be required!!!
- I eventually began to do most
of my on-line work at the office (during and after hours) because
the connection is SO MUCH FASTER than at home!! :)
- You have no one sitting on you,
no one encouraging you to work just a little harder. No one smiling
at you as they enter the room and start with a little humor.
No set time when you know you have to be somewhere. You have
to be very self diciplined. If you can do it, it's a great course.
- I like the internet-based course
so I would tell people to take it if they're like me have to
do things like work, or take care of a family, or are to lazy
to rush to class. Like I said before I wish this course was during
a semester so I would have more time to read things that were
interesting. But now I plan to read some more stuff later on
when I get more time because some topics interest me.
- If you don't have self-discipline
or think it will be a free ride, don't do it. Online classes
take a lot of work. Maybe not quite as much as a regular class,
but you still have to get online, do your reading and homework,
and all without any teacher reminding you to do so.
- Well, at last count, I had a
104.9%, so I don't think I would change anything now...ask me
again when I get my exam grades, though...<Grin>.
- Only take this course if you
already have good general knowledge of genetics.
- Do not think it is easier then
a regular class. It requires time to study and read and the lecture
notes must be read as well.
- I don't think I would recommend
it to anyone only because I do not like computers. If it is hard
for one to leave their home it might be all right. I would have
never taken this class in the summer. That is what i would of
done differently.
- I would advise anyone to take
internet-based courses. If they need a more flexible scheduled
class, internet is better.
- You must be self-motivated.
I would also suggest they try and do something every day so that
the can stay on top of the assignments.
- Don't panic. Don't give up on
your computer skills. If I can do it, anyone can. Remember WebCT
is relatively new, and that all its glitches are better than
trying to find a parking place for a regular class!!!
- Stay on top of things.. do all
the assingments... its easy to fall behind thinking you can always
do your work whenever you get the chance.
- Do not get behind and study
for the course like you would in any other course. I would try
to study the vocabulary a little better before each quiz and
not wait until the major exams.
- I would tell them to take this
course.
- Stay on top of the class. Don't
put off doing the assignments. check the site every day!!
- Read the chapters and lecture
notes ahead of time! Then go over them again before taking any
of the quizzes or exams. It worked the best for me, and gave
me a much better understanding of the material.
- Make sure to keep a calendar
of deadlines handy by the computer. I missed a couple of deadlines
because I didn't pay attention to my schedule. Also, don't wait
until the last hour to take the quizzes since you might experience
computer problems.
Did you
enjoy the course? What made it particularly enjoyable or particularly
unenjoyable? Explain.
- I was suprised to actually enjoy
what I was learning. I especially enjoyed using animated websites
that made it easier to understand concepts. If I didn't understand
something from the textbook, there was always another resource
to look at for further understanding.
- I liked the setup of the course;
it was very straightforward, and everything was easy to access
and understand. I also feel that I have a good basic understanding
of genetics now.
- Yes, I enjoyed the course, despite
the ongoing problems with WebCT. Dr. Wu's hyperlinks with other
institutions and her lecture notes were very helpful. I had a
lot of flexibility with this online class, and I would recommend
it, despite its occasional glitches, to anyone interested in
the basics of human genetics.
- Yes I enjoyed Bio 109. I enjoyed
this course because it was interesting, informative and well
taught. I learned things that I never knew before. Subjects that
were covered in the course studies were also included in the
topics currently in the news/online related to course subjects
that the instructor informed us of on a regular basis.
- Yes, I enjoyed the class. Genetics
was a very interesting class. I think the most interesting chapters
were on pedigrees. It is interesting to see how the class ties
into your own life.
- yes, Interesting subject. No
pressure to make it to class on time.
- One favorite part is the flexibility
of taking quizes at a convenient time and being able to use the
book and notes, The second part is being able to use the internet
as an additional resource tool.
- I enjoyed the course. The most
unenjoyable part was the computer problems.
- yes, the course was very informative
and was even fun. i liked the fact that we could post our comments
and assignments and could do things at our own pace (within the
structurized schedule) and read lectures over again instead of
referring to ill-taken notes in class.
- I did enjoy the course. I felt
that all of the quizes and assignments were fairly handled.
- The enjoyable part was that
it made you learn. The unejoyable part were all the discussions
and activities required to get a decent grade.
- I found the course to be enjoyable
because of the flexibility of the course. I liked being able
to do my homework whenever I wanted to. However, I hated certain
technicalities of the course, like broken links, and slow internet
service.
How would
you rate the exams (much too challenging, fair and appropriate,
too easy)? How did you prepare for the exams? If you could do
it over, what method would have help you the most in preparing
for exams?
- The exams were challenging (fair
and appropriate). My results on quizes and exams showed me what
I was actually learning in this course. To prepare for the exams,
it would include studying the text book and materials covering
subjects on the exams.
- I found the exams challenging
but fair.
- fair, and hard sometimes/ Read
the material and the lecture notes/Check out the web links/All
of the above
- fair. I didn't take an exam
before I read the chapter. If I could do it over, I may have
looked at all the web sites provided.
- exams were appropriate, if not
a little easy. to prepare for exams, I would go over the lecture
notes and readings (As I found that you need to read the book
to know some of these detail questions).
- I think the exams were appropriate.
They were straightforward and I felt that the answers could be
found if the reading and studying was done. To prepare, I would
print out the notes and read the chapters needed for the tests.
- The exams were appropriate for
the class. I generally read, took notes and then attempted the
quizzes. If I did it over again, I would have done index cards
for the vocabulary terms for each exam. If I had done this, studying
for the Mid-Term and Final would have been easier.
- The exams were challenging,
but fair. I read the chapters, lecture notes, and went over the
related links before taking the test. There are a lot of quizzes,
and a lot of information to know before the quiz. A few of the
chapters were confusing to me. I went to Dr. Wu's office, and
once she explained it to me I understood. I wish that I had participated
in more chat sessions.
- The exams were fair to easy,
except for those horrible little Punnett square questions. They
still haunt me. I would have liked to have been able to attend
the help sessions, but my crazy schedule prevented it. Dr. Wu
was more than willing to meet with us.
- I would rate them yes a little
challanging. If I could do it over I would have studied for them
more.
