Music appreciation MUS 116

Music is everywhere.  In your car, at the theater, shopping mall, restaurant.  It is an inescapable fact of life.  It sets the tone, can alter your mood, even make you smarter!  What were the origins of this aural phenomenon?

Music Appreciation MUS 116 will trace the roots of Western Music from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century.  You will listen to representative musical masterworks and study the lives and times of the composers who wrote them.  But first, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of music—instrumental color, note reading, melody, harmony, and form.

Because this is an Online Course, it requires you to be more self-disciplined and adhere to specified deadlines.  The Summer session is particularly rigorous and you will be expected to do assignments daily.  Along with the textbook, you will need to purchase a set of audio CD’s that are packaged with the text to complete work on the Course website.  For your convenience, a copy of the audio CD’s are located in the Music Library in the 1100 building on campus if you wish to complete the listening assignments there.   Exams are taken on the course website.  You are also required to participate in discussion board topics with your classmates.  There will be no on campus meetings.

If this online format sounds like it fits your life style and you like working independently and on your own time (the course is open 24/7)—-then this is the class for you!
